Exo - S/T 12"

Exo are a three piece band from New York.

Members have been in Nandas, Dame and Exit Order and I believe more likely a lot more!

This is their demo tape which originally came out on Roachleg Records back in 2024, now pressed as a 12" by La Vida Es Un Mus in 2025.
Only difference is that in the B-side we get an extra track, the near 15 minute 'Mermaid Legend'.

Really strong demo I think, the 6 original tracks are some really nice dream pop/synth punk.

Butterfly is such a catchy tune, whereas the extra track is a class sound collage of more dream like sounds with wonderful weird bits that kind of reminded me of the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

Which is sort of fitting as in that film there is a lot of insects and I have read this demo is a bit of a concept album about insects...

Looking forward to hear anything new they may do, if I had heard the demo back in 2024 it would have been in my top releases of that year!

Funeral Diner/Ampere split 9"

Interesting split 9" record here, B-side is etched and the 3 tracks are on the A-side, that has the tracks split with more etchings.

A real pain in the arse to photograph, but it does look wonderful!

Ampere play two screamo songs, ex-Orchid so fast, loud and noisy good stuff!

Funeral Diner's track is probably my favourite Funeral Diner track, I Was the Sword. Funeral Diner were part of the screamo scene back in the early 2000's but this track is more lighter then some of their other stuff.

200 copies came on green and 800 were on black, and was a split release between Clean Plate and the Electric Human Project, released back in 2007, believe Funeral Diner split the year after!

Artwork for this release (and the etchings?) were done by Mark McCoy from Charles Bronson/Das Oath....

Have seen some chancers trying to sell copies on Discogs for $250. Think some copies came warped due to having no centre labels, have read that the centre labels can help prevent warping in records. Lucky for me, my copy hasn't warped! In the Youtube video below, you maybe be able to make out the etchings on the A-Side...

Coffin Mulch - Supposed to Rot 7" Flexi

Death metal from Glasgow, Scotland.

This release is a one track blue flexi limited to 500 copies, released back in 2021 on singer, Al's label At War With False Noise.

It is a cover of Supposed to Rot by Entombed/Nihilist, to which this release is dedicated to L.G. Petrov of these band who sadly passed away from cancer on 2021.

I'm not a massive death metal fan, but this is a decent cover like, plus Coffin Mulch are also very good live and worth checking out with their other releases.

Another thing about this release, when they put it up for sale, they informed that all proceeds from the sale would be donated between Ayrshire Hospice and Marie Curie, Edinburgh to help with their invaluable work in end-of-life care for those affected by terminal cancer. Absolute belting thing to do, and think they did manage to get quite a bit to donate to the charities.

Can check the track on their bandcamp here.

pH People - Demo Tape

Short lived band from Newcastle, played a few shows then called it a day as one of the members moved to Leeds for University.

Really great noise rock/hardcore and I always got a Drunk with Guns/Flipper feel to them.

Demo came out in 2022 on Urticaria Records in France (limited to 70 copies). I found that a bit weird, that a label in France put this out, but guess with the modern age on music being online it is all more accessible to hear stuff then it used to be.

Either way a great 5 track demo from a band I wish had did more!

Blood Robots/Reality Control - Within These Walls - split 7" Flexi

Self released 7" flexi by these two North East bands released in 1984

Blood Robots were named after the Androids of Mu LP of the same name or so I have read. They were around for about two years from 1982 to 1984 and were an anarcho punk band.

Track on this sounds a bit post punk. Blood Robots broke up later in 1984 and members have been various bands over the years int he North East.

Reality Control were also an anarcho punk band who were around 16/17 years old and were putting out some really good stuff! Were a round a bit longer than Blood Robots, going from 1980 to 1985, there is a really good Discography release out there for them, Document: 1980 - 1985, a hidden gem of the UK Punk scene that I wish more people would give  a listen to!

This release was intended to be a one sided release but the songs were too long so became two sides. Comes with a lot of inserts which explains this and why it costs 40/45p!!!

As mention Reality Control have a discography release out and so does Blood Robots that came out back in 2014 on a German label called Thought Crime Records.

Can't find one video of both tracks together so there are two separate videos below of the tracks on this release.

Alerta Roja - Punk Rock En Dictardura 7"

Alerta Roja were a punk band from Belgrano, Buenos Aires in Argentina. They existed between 1981 to 1987 and are considered the first Argentine punk band to release a record and seen as one of the most political groups from the early punk movement in Argentina.

This release was originally put out as Desocupación/Hippie Japa on the band's own label, Pelmaso in 1982. A true punk rarity in that there was only 50 copies made as an Acetate 7". The reissue came out in 2022 on Esos Malditos Punks and Exabrupto Records and has 3 extra tracks, "Estado de Sitio", "Delito", and "Robots"

More like first wave UK/European punk than hardcore but really decent stuff and worth tracking down if you can. There is a CD discography that came on in 2013 which have these tracks and two unreleased LPs.

Ataque Frontal - S/T 7"

Ataque Frontal were from Lima, Peru in the mid to late 80's.

Raw hardcore punk that pulls no punches, there is something about South American punk/hardcore that does seem to slap harder, maybe it is the many civil wars, dictatorships and poverty that has instilled rage and anger in the youth to speak out about the injustices they face?

This was originally released in 1988 on New Wave Records in France and a repress came later in 1989 with a different cover.

Burrito Records release is the red cover, black cover is the original.

The copy I own is from 2005 and was put out by Burrito Records and has one extra track that was on the original release.

It has had another 7" reissue in 2025 on Impulso Ruin from Peru as well as a CD and Cassette over the years.

The band wasn't around long but this 7" is definitely a banger to get a hold of.

Model Workers - Cry 7"

Model Workers were a post punk band from Gateshead who were around in the early 80's.

Believe some members had been in the Village Idiots before this band and one of the members of Model Workers brother was in Total Chaos.

They self released this 7" in 1981 on their own label, Make It Yourself and want to say there were 500 copies? I do know they came in pink, yellow and blue sleeves.

I've seen one copy on sale on Discogs for around £500 and a mate of mine is still gutted the day he saw in in a local shop a few years back for around £40!

As mentioned you get 2 tracks (4 on the reissue!) of angsty post punk tunes maybe edging a bit towards New Wave/Power Pop.

It did get a reissue back in 2023 by Sealed Records, this time with two extra tracks which came from the Model Workmanship Demo. There was also a Pre-Release edition, it was basically the reissue with Pre-Release stamped in red ink on it, that was part of The Garage/The Station/The Bunker Exhibition (Tyne & Wear Music/Youth Collectivism from the 1980s and beyond…) at The Newcastle Centre Of Contemporary Art with ran between 18th November to 16th December 2023. Which was a great exhibition and the first time I actually saw the original copy of this release on display!

Hellscape - S/T 7"

Short lived Deathrock/Hardcore punk band from London, 2023 to 2025.

Another 7" I reckon in years to come will be sought after, 6 tracks here, two which on their demo tape also released the same year in 2024.

Not too versed in Deathrock but know they sound a bit like Christian Death with hardcore parts! Get moody slow parts then erupt in fast and furious hardcore, would have been great if we had got an LP from them.

Donor Records put this out and it's limited to 200 copies, believe there is a version in the US released by Advanced Perspective, however not seen any info for this as to whether they pressed more or both labels shared the full 200 copies?

Opening track below, can find a free download of this release of n the Advance Perspective Bandcamp if you want!

Hard Skin/Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät split 7"

UK Tour 2014 split 7" from these two bands, picked my copy up from their gig at the Black Bull in Gateshead.

Hard Skin are an Oi band from London that have been going since the early/mid-nineties, fun and jovial Oi that don't take themselves to serious. Think that 2025 is their final year as a band as seen they are doing a final tour.

Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät were a straight up punk rock from Finland, where all the members have a disability. They had a documentary about them and even attempted to become Finland's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015 which they were truly robbed of! Probably one of the most punk bands I've ever seen and really canny chaps!

This tour 7" was limited to 300 copies, Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät cover Hard Skin's "We Are The Wankers" in Finnish and Hard Skin do an English version of Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät's "Miks Ei Kukaan Ymmärrä", which is "Why Doesn't Anyone Understand".

Great split and shows how diverse and welcoming the Punk scene should be!

Can't seem to find Hard Skin's cover but here is Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät's cover below...

Last Rites - Fascism Means War 7"

Last Rites were formed in Glasgow and were active from 1982 to 1984, maybe 1985?
This is their second 7" from 1984, first being We Don't Care/Stepdown released in 1983.

Definitely has the UK82 sound, fast and abrasive punk and in my opinion vastly different to their first 7" which while decent sounds nothing like this or their LP, more generic punk maybe?

Get Exploited/Chaos UK vibes from it, a really decent 4 track EP which is worth checking out and has been repressed back in 2016 by Loud Punk Records.

Speaking of labels, Essential who put this out was ran by Alan McGee who later founded and ran Creation Records.

Assistert Sjølmord - S/T 7"

Assistert Sjølmord are a Norwegian hardcore band from Oslo, Norway. Their name translated into English is "Assisted Suicide".

Found out that googling the name into google or Youtube, despite being in Norwegian brings up a message about Samaritans so a heads up!

This was one of my favorite releases of 2024, fast and furious hardcore. Seven songs in just under ten minutes, it wouldn't go a miss amongst 80's Norwegian hardcore bands like Svart Framtid, Stengte Dører, and Bannlyst.

If this 7" isn't in years to come held in high regard as the above mentioned bands releases then something is seriously wrong!

Released by Static Shock records, 100 on yellow vinyl and 400 on black and I believe it is sold out from the label. Worth the effort to try track down a copy or just stream or download if that is your preferred method of consuming music! Or just watched the embedded video below!

Total Chaos - There Are No Russians in Afghanistan 7"

First 7" by Gateshead's Total Chaos, they had previously released a Demo tape the same year for which two tracks were re-recorded for this release.

Seen them described as UK82 punk but would say more towards anarcho punk with bits of post punk. It's a shame to me that this band isn't more known and really could do with a discography release of all their output. Do believe there was a reunion gig of sorts back in 2024 where 3/4 members with a member from the Reptiles (another old Gateshead punk band) played a few tracks as a one off in Gateshead which I unfortunately missed due to illness!

Slam! Back Cover
There are two version of the 7", it was originally released by Slam! Records N'Tapes in 1981 and then got released again in 1982 by Volume Records.

Slight changes between the two, Slam's edition has 50p on the cover while Volume's is marked at £1!!!

Back cover is also different as shown, Volume changed their version to have the lyrics on the back, believe the Slam version had the lyrics as an insert, though my copy doesn't have it!
Volume Back Cover

Prices seem to range from around £10 to £100 for this release, however would say mainly £10-20, believe anymore would be for the Slam version.

Primetime

Primetime came from London and weren't around long, maybe three or four years? Members were Claudia Serfaty, Flora Watters, Lucy Anstey, and Maria Tedemalm.

Formed and played their first gig as part of the First Timers Festival, which was about working to remove barriers to participation on the DIY community of London. To which all bands included one or more female, trans and LGBTQIA member. Believe there was other aspects like at least one or more member never played in a band before and one or more are playing an instrument they haven't played before in this new band.

Despite not being around for long and think rarely playing outside of London, we got some really great post punk with hints of Kleenex and I think a bit of Gang of Four from them

S/T - 2014
They did release two fantastic 7"s on La Vida Es Un Mus. I had planned with this blog to just highlight one release per entry, however, decided to mention both as they are worth tracking down and I really think in years to come people may click back on to them and they will become "classics" so to speak.

The self-titled came out a year after they had formed in 2014 and we get 4 tracks here, Tied Down being the big hitter and getting a music video made.
However, really do like the fast-paced Right Track that kicks off the B-side.

Going Places - 2016
Going Places released two years later in 2016 is a slightly faster paced released with another 4 tracks but all under 2 minutes, opening track Pervert just gets into it, while Anyway on the B-side sort of reminds me of The Clean a little bit. Both releases do have the whole early 80's post punk feel and if Primetime had been around then I reckon they would have blown up.

I do wish they had recorded more, maybe done an album but it wasn't to be!

All members have gone on to do other projects over the years. Lucy has a solo project called Viscount that sort of no wave goth pop and was in post punk band Hygiene and was on their last release back in 2023 though unsure if they are still a band. Flora and Maria play in the excellent synth punk band Es.

Claudia moved to Australia and has played in Blank Statements and The Stroppies. All these bands are worth checking out as well.
